Johann Georg Bodmer
1786‐1864
Swiss mechanical engineer. In 1802, at the age of 16, he became a machinist in the canton of Thurgau, and the following year he invented the screw gear. He eventually set up a machine factory in Küssnacht, where he manufactured breech-loading cannons, and in 1809 moved to St. Blasien, where he built a spinning factory and a machine factory, manufacturing firearms and gun parts. In 1816 he became an artillery captain in the Grand Duchy of Baden, and provided technical guidance at an ironworks. In 1824 he traveled to England, where he set up a machine factory in Bolton, and invented water wheels, steam engines, marine engines, rotary valves, valveless air pumps, spinning machines, and other items.

Johann Jakob Bodmer

1698‐1783
Swiss historian and literary theorist. In the 1740s, he debated with Gottschedt, who held French classicism as his ideal. Together with Breitinger, he advocated the restoration of non-rational elements in literature, that is, the "uncanny," and by introducing the concept of imagination, he made a great contribution to the development of 18th century German literature. He also wrote a work on Swiss history from the standpoint of an Enlightenment believer who sought freedom of thought and the establishment of civic consciousness. [Iwamura Yukio]
