A Russian-born American painter, he moved to the United States at the age of 10. Influenced by Surrealism, he created abstract paintings with organic forms and gentle colors, but around 1949 he arrived at the style of color field painting, in which vaguely contoured rectangles make up the picture plane. The delicate balance of colors and the light-like spread are filled with a contemplative and mysterious tranquility. In 1958 he began creating murals for the restaurant Four Seasons, but Rothko himself decided to halt the project (seven of these murals are on display in the Rothko Room at Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture). The only mural that has been realized in its entirety is the Rothko Chapel (1964-1967), which was commissioned by collectors Mr. and Mrs. de Menil. ロシア出身，米国の画家。10歳の時渡米。シュルレアリスムの影響を受け，有機的な形態と穏やかな色彩による抽象絵画を制作していたが，1949年頃から輪郭の曖昧な方形が画面を構成するカラー・フィールド・ペインティングの様式に到達した。色彩の精妙なバランスと光のような拡がりは，暝想的で神秘的な静謐を湛えている。1958年から壁画制作に着手し，レストラン〈フォーシーズンズ〉のための壁画に取りかかるが，ロスコ自身の意図により中断された（そのうち７点が千葉県佐倉市の川村記念美術館〈ロスコ・ルーム〉に展示されている）。壁画は収集家のド・メニル夫妻の依頼で制作された〈ロスコ・チャペル〉（1964年―1967年制作）のみが完全な形で実現している。代表作に《赤の上のオーリーと赤》（1954年，ワシントン，フィリップス・コレクション蔵）などがある。→抽象表現主義
