A novel by the French novelist Stendhal. Subtitled "Chronicles of 1830". Published in 1830. Following the fall of Napoleon, the path to military success was closed to him. Julien Sorel is an ambitious young man who, armed with schemes and strong will, works as a tutor, a seminarian, and a secretary to an aristocrat. Just before he is about to achieve social success by marrying the daughter of the aristocrat, he is thwarted by an accusation from his old lover, Madame de Renal. He shoots her in revenge, but learns her true feelings in prison and spends the last few months before his execution in peace and happiness. With its analysis of the complex character of an egotist (self-conscious person) with both rationality and passion, and its sharp criticism of French society during the Restoration, this work is considered the first masterpiece of modern French novels. The title refers to the targets of ambition at the time: military uniforms (red) and monk's robes (black).
