Amiens Cathedral - Amiens Cathedral

Japanese:
Amiens Cathedral - Amiens Cathedral
It is a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) registered in 1981, and is located in Picardy in northern France. The construction boom of cathedrals, which reached its peak in the 13th century, produced many buildings all over Europe, but this cathedral is said to be the pinnacle of Gothic cathedrals. Architect Robert de Luzarches began construction in 1220 by order of the Archbishop of Amiens, and by 1288 the main parts except for the tower were almost completed. The reason for the unusual speed of completion for the time was that each component could be mass-produced through thorough division of labor and assembly line production. The cathedral is magnificent in scale, with a depth of 145m and a ceiling height of 42.3m in the nave. There are many sculptures inside and outside the cathedral, but the first thing that catches your eye are the sculptures decorating the area around the doorway on the west front of the cathedral, which are called the "Encyclopedia of Stone" because they depict the history of Christianity and the lives of saints. These sculptures and construction methods had a major influence on later Gothic architecture, and because it is the largest cathedral in France and a treasure trove of Gothic sculpture, its cultural value was recognized and it was registered as a World Heritage Site. ◇English name: Amiens Cathedral

Amiens Cathedral
