By the end of the Meiji period, factories producing pharmaceuticals and artificial fertilizers had been established in the area, and on the plateau, there were military factories producing gunpowder and other goods. In the Taisho period, spinning factories were established. In 1911, the Oji Electric Tramway began running between Asukayama and Otsuka, and this track was later extended and is now the only remaining streetcar track in Tokyo (between Minowabashi and Waseda).
