This palace is located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, the capital of France, on the left bank of the Seine, north of the Luxembourg Gardens. It was originally the residence of the Duke of Luxembourg, but was remodeled to serve as a residence for Marie de Medici (1573-1642), the wife of King Henry IV who had married into the French royal family from Italy and the mother of King Louis XIII. It is said to be modeled after the Pitti Palace, the residence of the Medici family in Florence, where Marie de Medici spent her childhood. This castle was also the historical stage where Napoléon Bonaparte (1769-1821), who later became the Emperor of France, seized power. The palace is currently the seat of the Senate of the French National Assembly. Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
