An old town in Naoiri County, southern Oita Prefecture. The Toyohashi Main Line runs through it. It occupies part of the eastern slope of the Aso outer rim and is covered with Aso lava and a thick layer of volcanic ash on top. It has been cleared, and rice, vegetables, flowers, and beef cattle are grown. 大分県南部,直入(なおいり)郡の旧町。豊肥本線が通じる。阿蘇外輪山東斜面の一部を占め,阿蘇溶岩におおわれ,上部に厚い火山灰をのせている。開墾が進み,米作,野菜・花卉(かき)栽培,肉牛飼育が行われる。2005年4月直入郡久住町,直入町と竹田市へ編入。50.32km2。3658人(2003)。
