A perennial grass of the grass family. Native to southern Africa. It grows to a height of 60-150 cm and produces spike-like flowers in summer, similar to those of crabgrass. It also reproduces by underground stems. It is resistant to high temperatures in midsummer and grows well in poor soil, so it is cultivated as pasture grass in the United States, Southeast Asia, Australia, and other places. It was introduced to Japan from the United States in 1958 (Showa 33) and is used as summer pasture grass in warm areas south of the Kanto region. Seeds are sown in May and can be harvested four or five times between July and October. It has a fresh yield of 6-10 tons per 10 ares, and is of good quality when used for hay. It cannot survive the winter north of the Kanto region, so it is generally cultivated as an annual grass in temperate regions.
