Japanese: 耬 - ろう（英語表記）lóu

A sowing device invented early on for the dryland farming method in northern China. It usually uses animal power. Simply put, it can be thought of as a row plough with a seed box attached to make shallow sowing furrows. In the dryland farming method of northern China, seeds must be sown immediately after the soil is plowed, so pulling the plough next to the ox-drawn plough is ideal, and so the plough was probably invented shortly after ox-drawn ploughs began to spread. However, in areas with soft soil, it is possible to attach a seed box to the row plough and complete two tasks at the same time, so it may have been invented before the development of the tillage plow.

中国，華北地方の乾地農法で早くから考案された播種（はしゆ）器。普通畜力を使用する。簡単にいえば浅い蒔溝（まきみぞ）を作るための作条犂（り）に種箱を付着させたものと考えればよい。華北の乾地農法では土壌を耕起するとすぐに播種する必要があるため，牛牽の犂に接して耬をひくのが理想的といえるので，耬が考案されたのは牛犂が普及しはじめてまもなくのことと思われる。もっとも土質の柔軟なところでは，作条犂に種箱をつけて二つの作業を同時に済ませることもできるので，耕犂の発達前に作られたものかもしれない。
