Insect-resistant wood

Japanese: 防虫木材 - ぼうちゅうもくざい

This refers to wood that has been treated with an insecticide. Unlike preservative-treated wood, there is no industrial standard for insecticidal treated wood. Insects that insecticides can be used to control include dry-wood pests such as the flat-headed wood beetle, the long-horn beetle, and the silver beetle. Termites are a moist-wood pest, and chemicals used to control termites are called anti-termite agents (wood treated with these is called anti-termite wood), and are sometimes distinguished from insecticides. However, the commercially available chemicals actually used have anti-termite and anti-insect properties.

防虫剤で処理した木材をいう。防腐処理木材と違い，工業規格で決められた防虫処理木材はない。防虫剤の対象となる虫は，乾材害虫として，ヒラタキクイムシ，ナガシンクイムシ，シバンムシなどがある。湿材害虫としてはシロアリがあり，シロアリを防ぐ薬剤を防蟻剤（ぼうぎざい）と呼び(これで処理された木材を防蟻木材という)，防虫剤と区別することもある。しかし，実際に使われている市販薬剤は，防蟻防虫性能をもったものである。
