A Mongol dynasty founded by Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, after defeating the Ismaili sect of assassins in Iran and the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad. 1260-1353. It controlled land in Iran comparable to the former territories of the Sassanid Empire, and had its capital at Tabriz and later at Sultaniya. The first Hulagu and successive Ilkhans (Turkish for "kings of a country") recognized the sovereignty of the Yuan dynasty and maintained friendly relations with it, but also confronted the armies of the Kipchak Khanate and Chagatai Khanate that invaded the borderlands, and on the other hand, they allied with Christian countries and the Pope in their conflict with the Mamluk Sultanate over Syria.
