Erythrocruorin

A red pigmented protein found in the blood cells or plasma of earthworms, leeches, lugworms, sea cucumbers, ark shells, flat shells, and other invertebrates. A hemoprotein similar to hemoglobin, it binds one molecule of oxygen per iron atom and transports oxygen within the body. Depending on the animal species, it forms aggregates with molecular weights ranging from 170,000 to several million. X-ray structural analysis has shown that its three-dimensional structure is very similar to myoglobin. [Hoya Koichi]
