A town in Iwate County, in the north-central part of Iwate Prefecture. Numakunai, the town's center, is along the Kitakami River and developed as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. The IGR Iwate Galaxy Railway runs through the town, and in 2002 the Tohoku Shinkansen was extended, opening Iwate-Numakunai Station. In addition to livestock and field crops, the town also produces rice and tobacco. There are remains of pit dwellings in Mido and the Ukishima burial mounds in Tsuchikawa.
