…The Nabataeans were a branch of nomadic Arabs originating from North Arabia, but when they formed their kingdom, they adopted Aramaic civilization (writing, caravan organization) and Greek civilization (urban life, Greek language). The kingdom's territory was initially limited to Petra and its surrounding areas, but in the 1st century BC, they expanded along the caravan routes, and by around 1 AD, under Aretas IV, they had taken possession of the desert fringes from Damascus to the Hijaz region and the Negev region, and controlled the caravan routes from Mesopotamia and southern Arabia to the Mediterranean. The Nabataeans were a tribal society led by elders, and they engaged in nomadic caravan trade, but after the establishment of the kingdom, they had a hereditary king. …
