A village in Agatsuma County, in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture. Population 2,109 (1995). It borders Nagano and Niigata prefectures to the north. It occupies the mountainous area of the Sukawa River basin, which flows into the Agatsuma River, and 90% of the total area is forest and land. It is a very isolated mountain village, and there is a legend that remnants of Kiso Yoshinaka's troops settled in Iriyama. Gunma Iron Mine operated in Motoyama from 1944 to 1965, and a railway was built between Naganohara and Taishi to transport iron ore, but it was closed in 1971. It has been designated a depopulated area, and the population continues to decline. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
