A manuscript of the Book of Genesis (→illuminated manuscript) in the Vienna State Library (later the Austrian National Library). Originally it is believed to have contained hundreds of illustrations, but only 26 sheets remain. On purple parchment, the text is written in Greek with gold and silver paint, and the lower half of each of the 48 pages contains miniature depictions of scenes from the Book of Genesis, from Adam and Eve's original sin to the death and burial of Jacob. The manuscript was likely produced in Constantinople, Asia Minor, or Antioch. The depictions of landscapes and stories in the style of late antiquity, with the addition of non-Christian anthropomorphic figures, tend more towards Hellenistic genre painting than Christian spiritualism. It is believed to have been produced around the 6th century. It is of great art historical importance as a work that marks the transition from ancient to early Byzantine art.
