Empire style

Empire style
A neoclassical decorative style in architecture, interior decoration, furniture, and crafts that was popular during the Napoleonic Empire (1804-14). In a broader sense, it refers to an art style that includes painting and sculpture from the same period. In reality, it began around the Directory (1795) and was popular until the late 19th century. The same style is called the Biedermeier style in Germany and the Regency style in England. While the first stage of neoclassical decoration by the Adam brothers was relatively delicate and delicate, this style emphasizes symmetry centered on orderly straight lines. Architects include C. Percier and P. Fontaine, who built Napoleon's palace. The furniture was mainly made of mahogany and rosewood, and made extensive use of classical decoration using gilding and brass, and the style imitated the Greek klismos chair and other items. Pottery also borrowed forms from Greece and Rome, and made extensive use of gold leaf.
