Atā bek (English spelling)

Japanese: アター･ベク（英語表記）atā bek

A title given to those who raised the sons of rulers during the Seljuk period. This position was mainly held by emirs of Turkish Mamluk (slave soldiers) descent. They were given full authority over their sons in place of their fathers, and were responsible for managing the iqta given to their sons, and sometimes even married the sons' mothers after the father's death. After the decline of the Seljuk Empire, Ater Begs took control of real power in Fars, Azerbaijan, and other places, and founded the Ater Beg dynasties. [Shimizu Kosuke]
