[Born] 1040. Troy [died] July 13, 1105. Troyes. Jewish scholar, commentator of the Talmud and the Bible. He studied briefly at the Academies of Worms and Mainz. After the collapse of German rabbinic studies in the aftermath of the First Crusade in 1096, his commentaries were widely sought after, and Troyes in Champagne, northern France, became a major center of rabbinic studies. He introduced a method of writing down Jewish studies that had been passed down orally, and produced many talented students. His Commentary on the Pentateuch is particularly famous, and influenced the Christian world through Nicholas of Lyra.
