Sir Austen Henry Layard

British Assyriologist and diplomat. From 1845 to 1851, he was involved in the excavations of Nimrud and Nineveh in Iraq, the capitals of Assyria. Many of the artifacts and ancient documents of King Ashurbanipal obtained during these excavations are now housed in the British Museum in London. He later served as a Member of Parliament, and as Japanese envoy to Spain (1869-77) and Turkey (1877-80). His major works include "Nineveh and Antiquities" in two volumes (1848-49) and "Nineveh and Babylon" (1853).

イギリスのアッシリア学者で外交官。1845～51年アッシリアの首都であったイラクのニムルードとニネベの発掘に携わった。この発掘で得た多くの遺物やアッシュール・バニパル王の古文書はロンドンの大英博物館に収蔵されている。のちに下院議員を経て、駐スペイン公使（1869～77）、駐トルコ公使（1877～80）を歴任している。主著に『ニネベと出土遺物』全二巻（1848～49）、『ニネベとバビロン』（1853）などがある。
