British Assyriologist and diplomat. From 1845 to 1851, he was involved in the excavations of Nimrud and Nineveh in Iraq, the capitals of Assyria. Many of the artifacts and ancient documents of King Ashurbanipal obtained during these excavations are now housed in the British Museum in London. He later served as a Member of Parliament, and as Japanese envoy to Spain (1869-77) and Turkey (1877-80). His major works include "Nineveh and Antiquities" in two volumes (1848-49) and "Nineveh and Babylon" (1853).
