Allen, WM

...It is an odorless white crystal that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and acetone. It was predicted in the 19th century that the ovarian corpus luteum performs an endocrine function, but it was not until 1934 that progesterone, the main progesterone hormone, was extracted as crystals from the corpus luteum of pigs and other animals. This was done independently by A.F.J.Butenandt, K.H.Slotta, W.M.Allen, and M.Hartmann, who also succeeded in synthesizing it at roughly the same time. As described below, progesterone is secreted from the corpus luteum and placenta, but this hormone is an intermediate product of other steroid hormones and is also synthesized in the adrenal cortex and testes.
