A system of monetary payment in lieu of in-kind payment of taxes and public duties in medieval manors, kokuga lands, or samurai territories. It came into practice in many manors in the middle and late Kamakura period. Regionally, there are many examples of this system in manors along the Sanyo, Tokaido, and Tosando roads, but it spread to almost the entire country during the Nanboku-cho period. This phenomenon is based on various historical conditions, such as the increase in productivity in agriculture and industry during the Kamakura period, the establishment of periodic markets in manors and kokuga lands, the inflow and domestic circulation of coins due to trade between Japan and the Song dynasty and Japan and Yuan dynasty, and the development of a commodity-based economy in the capital and the countryside.
