A general term for a family or genus of the order Pristiophoridae, or the name of one of its species. The Pristiophoridae family (sawsharks) are characterized by a thin, long, protruding snout, with a row of spike-like, enlarged scales on both sides, making the snout saw-like, and a pair of long barbels on the underside near the center. When a sawshark finds prey, it swings its snout around, piercing the prey with the spines on its snout to injure it before feeding. There are two genera known in the Pristiophoridae family, and the South African genus Pliotrema is extremely unique in that it has six pairs of gill slits. There are seven known species of the Pristiophorus genus, which has five pairs of gill slits, but only one, the Japanese sawshark, P. japonicus , is found in the waters off Japan. This species only grows to a maximum length of about 1.5 meters. They reproduce by yolk-dependent viviparity, giving birth to about 12 young. They are found in the waters from Hokkaido to southern Japan, Taiwan, and the East China Sea. Their meat has no odor and is used as an ingredient in paste products. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List lists them as Least Concern (LC) (as of September 2021).
