American architect from what is now the Czech Republic. After studying at the Technical University in Prague, he moved to the US in 1916. He served as an assistant to FL Wright, and came to Japan with his teacher in 1919 to work on the construction of the Imperial Hotel. He opened an architectural firm in Tokyo and designed the Tokyo Woman's Christian University lecture chapel and St. Paul's Catholic Church in Karuizawa, among other buildings. He returned to the US in 1938, but returned to Japan again after World War II. He designed the Tokyo headquarters of Reader's Digest and other buildings, and was an influential figure in modern Japanese architecture.

現在のチェコ出身の米国の建築家。プラハ工科大学に学んだのち，1916年渡米。F.L.ライトの助手を務め，1919年師とともに来日し，帝国ホテルの建築に従事した。東京に建築事務所を開き，東京女子大学講堂チャペル，軽井沢の聖パウロ・カトリック教会などを建築。1938年帰米したが，第２次大戦後再び来日。リーダーズ・ダイジェスト東京本社などを設計し，日本の現代建築に影響を与えた。
