A French island in the western Indian Ocean. It is located 640km east of Madagascar and 200km southwest of Mauritius. It is a volcanic island with an elevation of 3069m. Its main product is sugarcane, and most of its exports are sugar. The Portuguese arrived in 1513, and it became a French territory in 1642. Black slaves were brought in from the African continent to work on coffee and sugarcane plantations. When the slave trade was abolished, Indian workers were brought in. The inhabitants are Malay, who have been there for a long time, as well as Arabs, Persians, Africans, Indians, French people, and other mixed races. It has been an overseas department of France since 1946. It has also been called Bourbon Island and Bonaparte Island. Its capital is Saint-Denis. It has an area of ​​2512km2 . It has a population of 821,136 (2010).
