A perennial plant of the lily family, widely distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia. It is commonly found in mountains and grasslands throughout Japan. It has a long underground rhizome, from which above-ground stems emerge. The base of the stem is erect, but the upper half is slanted, ridged and angular. The leaves are 8-15 cm long, elliptical, alternate, and white on the underside. Variegated varieties are often seen. In spring, one or two greenish-white bell-shaped flowers hang from the leaf axils. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens to a black color. A similar species is the narcissus lily, P. falcatum , but it can be distinguished by the fact that it has many flowers (3-4 per axil) and a round stem.
