〘名〙 (古くは「おおたち」)① 大きな太刀。※書紀（720）武烈即位前・歌謡「飫裒陀(オホタチ)を垂れ佩(は)き立ちて、抜かずとも末はたしても会(あ)はむとぞ思ふ」② 鎌倉以後、打物(うちもの)合戦の激化につれて長大化した太刀の称。※平家（１３Ｃ前）一一「いか物づくりの大太刀はき」※嘉吉物語（1492頃）「六尺余りの大たちをまっかうにさしかざし」③ 大山詣りの者が「大願成就」と書いて奉納する、大きな木太刀。前に納めた太刀と取り代えて持ち帰り、それを護符とした。納太刀(おさめだち)。※雑俳・柳多留‐一四（1779）「死ぬこっちゃないと大太刀持ってくる」④ (大太刀を佩(は)いて舞台に現われるところから) 市川流の荒事(あらごと)の異称。※雑俳・柳多留‐一二二（1833）「大太刀は市川流の家の株」
