A genre of prose in Russian literature. It is translated as documentary literature or reportage. Because it describes and depicts real, everyday facts and social customs and habits in a realistic way, it often contains sharp indictments of politics and social systems. I. Turgenev's The Diary of a Hunter can be considered a kind of artistic ocherk in that sense. V. Dali also wrote many folkloric ocherks under the pen name Kazak Lugansky. G. Uspensky and, after the revolution, V. Ovechkin (1904-68) are famous for their rural ocherks.
