fabula togata (English spelling)

Plautus and Terence had a great influence on Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Molière. In contrast to the "Pariata plays," comedies based on Roman life were called "fabula togata" ("togata" meaning "the actors dressed in a toga, the plain dress of the Romans"). However, these comedies did not develop and none remain today.
