Shalom Aleichem

The greatest Jewish author of modern Yiddish literature. Also known as Sholem Aleichem. His real name was Shalom Rabinovich. He was born in the Ukraine region of Russia and died in New York. He was a master of humorous and satirical stories about the lives of Jewish people in Eastern Europe. His successful series Tevye the Milkman has been translated into 62 languages, and the musical version of this, Fiddler on the Roof (1964), was a huge hit in New York and was also made into a film.

イディッシュ語近代文学における最大のユダヤ人作家。ショーレム･アライヘムSholem Aleichemともよばれる。本名はラビノビチShalom Rabinovich。ロシアのウクライナ地方に生まれ，ニューヨークで死去した。東ヨーロッパのユダヤの民衆生活を，ユーモアと風刺で描く物語の名手で，その成功作シリーズ《牛乳屋テビエ》は62ヵ国語に翻訳され，これをミュージカル化した《屋根の上のバイオリン弾き》(1964)はニューヨークでロングランの大当りをとり，映画化もされた。
