...A tourist city in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southern France. Population: 53,000 (1990). Located about 90 km northwest of Marseille, at the top of the delta formed by the Rhône River, its administrative area (commune) includes the delta, such as the Camargue, known as France's rice-growing region, and is the largest in France in terms of area (750 km2). It has developed as a key point for sea and land transportation since before Christ, was the center of a Roman province in ancient times, and has been an important base for Christianity since the 4th century, hosting many religious councils, and gained the status of an archbishopric in 513.
