Year of death: 2/2/1792 (2/23/1792) Year of birth: 19th January, 1714 (5th March, 1714) A Chinese poet from the mid-Edo period. Born in Fushimi, Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). His given name was Kumi, his pen names were Kimigama and Kotama, and he was commonly known as Hikojiro. Soro was his pen name. He came from a merchant family, but lost his father at an early age, and worked hard to study a wide range of subjects, from Confucianism and poetry to military science, Japanese studies, and calligraphy. At a young age, he opened a school in Karasuma, Kyoto, and his poetry society, called Yuransha, produced a diverse range of talented people. In 1757, he was called to become a Confucian scholar for the Hikone domain, and moved to Hikone. He retired from service in 1774, and returned to Kyoto the following year to dedicate himself to writing.
