Ryu Soro

Year of birth: 19th January, 1714 (5th March, 1714)
A Chinese poet from the mid-Edo period. Born in Fushimi, Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). His given name was Kumi, his pen names were Kimigama and Kotama, and he was commonly known as Hikojiro. Soro was his pen name. He came from a merchant family, but lost his father at an early age, and worked hard to study a wide range of subjects, from Confucianism and poetry to military science, Japanese studies, and calligraphy. At a young age, he opened a school in Karasuma, Kyoto, and his poetry society, called Yuransha, produced a diverse range of talented people. In 1757, he was called to become a Confucian scholar for the Hikone domain, and moved to Hikone. He retired from service in 1774, and returned to Kyoto the following year to dedicate himself to writing. 江戸時代中期の漢詩人。山城(京都府)伏見の人。名は公美,字は君玉,子玉,通称は彦二郎。草廬は号。家は商家であったが,父を早くに亡くし,苦労して儒学,詩文から兵学,和学,書道に至るまでの学問を修めた。若くして京都烏丸に塾を開き,その幽蘭社と称した詩社からは,多彩な人材が輩出した。宝暦7(1757)年彦根藩の儒官に召され彦根に移居。安永3(1774)年に致仕,翌年京都に帰ると著述に専念した。その編著は詩文集,歌集,法帖など多岐にわたっている。<参考文献>中野三敏「竜草廬」(中村幸彦編『近世の漢詩』)
