cephalodia

Japanese: cephalodia
cephalodia

...Cyphellae and pseudocyphellae are tiny holes or cracks that appear on the surface of the lichen, and are either circular or linear. They are thought to play a role in gas exchange. Cephalodia are pouch-like organs that contain cyanobacteria and occur in lichens that have a symbiotic relationship with green algae. They occur in species such as Cephalodia, Cephalosporum, and Cephalosporum. Those that form on the surface of the lichen are called external capitates, and those that form inside the lichen are called internal capitates, and their shapes are determined by the type of lichen.
