A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Dates of birth and death unknown. Family name Nakamura, commonly known as Araemon, later called Nezu Shukunosuke. Calling himself Nakamura Shun'an, he served as a doctor to Terao Naoryu of Inuyama, Owari, but with Kyorai's guidance he went to Tokyo and became a yoriki (police officer) for the shoshidai (feudal lord). Around 1690-91 (Genroku 3-4), he was taught by Basho and also met Jousou. His 14 haiku poems were included in Sarumino, a highly regarded collection of Kokinshu poems in the style of Basho, and when Basho returned to the east in 1691, he was given Futami's writing desk, inkstone box, and a self-portrait. He became a ronin and moved to Edo in 1693, but it is said that this was due to a work-related scandal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
