China-Vietnam border issue

A dispute over the border between China and Vietnam. The border between the two countries was decided at the end of the 19th century between China (Qing Dynasty) and France, which was a colony of Vietnam at the time. In 1977-1978, China and Vietnam held negotiations to demarcate the border, but the Sino-Soviet conflict cast a shadow over the negotiations and the negotiations did not reach an agreement. After the unification of North and South Vietnam, Vietnam became a major power in Indochina, and relations between the two countries further deteriorated. In 1978, Vietnam invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Pol Pot regime, and in February 1979, Chinese troops responded by crossing the border into northeastern Vietnam, where fierce fighting ensued. In March of the same year, Chinese troops withdrew, but the conflict between the two countries continued until the signing of the Cambodian Peace Agreement in 1991.

中国・ベトナム間の国境をめぐっての争い。両者の国境は19世紀末，中国（清）と当時ベトナムを植民地としていたフランスとの間で決められた。1977年―1978年，中国とベトナムは国境画定のための交渉をもったが，中ソ対立が影を落として交渉はまとまらなかった。南北統一後インドシナの大国となったベトナムと中国はさらに関係が悪化。1978年ベトナムがカンボジアに進攻してポル・ポト政権を打倒すると，これに対して1979年２月，中国軍がベトナム北東部へ越境，激戦が行われた。同年３月に中国軍は撤退したが，1991年のカンボジア和平協定の調印まで両国の対立は続いた。
