Sakamukae - Sakamukae

This is a ceremony to celebrate the safe return of a distant traveler by going to the village border to welcome them and eat and drink together. Every village has a place that is considered to be the village border. It is not an administrative division, but a traditional living space. Many people go to such a place to welcome them. It is also written as "sakamukae" or "sakemukae", but the original meaning should be "sakamukae". It was often held when visiting a distant god or Buddha, but it is especially popular in Ise-ko, where a drinking party called habakinugi or douburi is held. There, members are given talismans and talk about souvenirs. The communal meal is not only for restoring physical strength, but also seems to have had a kind of rite of passage to return from an extraordinary life to an ordinary one. In some areas, the welcoming party for a bride entering the village is called "sakamukae".

遠方へ旅した者の無事の帰参を喜び、村境まで出迎えて共同飲食をもって祝う儀礼。ムラには、かならず村境と意識されている場所がある。行政の区分ではなく、伝統的な生活空間である。多くはこうした場所まで出迎える。坂迎え、酒迎えとも記されるが、本来の主旨からすれば境迎えとすべきものであろう。遠方の神仏の参拝の際によく行われたが、伊勢(いせ)講ではとくに盛んで、ハバキヌギとかドウブルイとよばれる酒宴を催す。そこで講員に御札を分配しながら、土産(みやげ)話に花を咲かせるのである。共同飲食は体力の回復ということだけでなく、非日常の生活から日常の生活へ戻るための一種の通過儀礼的な要素をもっていたと思われる。また、嫁の村入りに際しての出迎えをサカムカエとよぶ地域もある。
