Beer‐Sheba

Japanese: ベール･シェバ（英語表記）Beer‐Sheba

The central city of the Negev region in southern Israel. Located 72 km southwest of Jerusalem, it has a population of 153,000 (1996). According to legend, it was named after Abraham and the servants of Abimelech, king of nearby Gerar, who made a covenant (shuvua) over the use of a well (beel) (Genesis 21:31). It has flourished since ancient times as a desert oasis town, and before the founding of Israel, it was a trading market for the Bedouins of the Negev. A market was held once a week at Abraham's Well on the outskirts, and was bustling with nomads who gathered there bringing sheep, camels, clothing, and other goods.

イスラエル南部，ネゲブ地方の中心都市。エルサレムの南西72kmに位置し，人口15万3000(1996)。伝承によれば，アブラハムと近くのゲラルの王アビメレクの家来たちが，井戸(ベール)の使用をめぐって誓約(シュブア)を交わしたことからこの名で呼ばれたという(《創世記》21：31)。砂漠のオアシスの町として古くから栄え，イスラエル建国前はネゲブの遊牧民(ベドウィン)の交易市場であり，郊外の〈アブラハムの井戸〉では週1回市場が開かれて，羊，ラクダ，衣服その他の品物を持って集まった遊牧民でにぎわった。
