Japanese: エジコ - えじこ

...In many cases, the stems and leaves of the grass or rush family are bundled together and rolled up in a spiral shape, then sewn together or tightened with thin strings as warp threads. North American Indian baskets are famous, but in Japan, the ejiko (baby basket) of the Tohoku region and the rice cooker (ohitsuri) are representative examples made using this method.

A long, narrow knitting stand is used, on which the horizontal material is placed, and the vertical material is knitted by moving two weights (komoduchi) wrapped with string back and forth.
