Various types of instrumental music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Derived from an Italian verb meaning "to explore," it is difficult to define what exactly is meant by this term, but the most important one is the imitative instrumental form that is the precursor to the fugue. The early ricercare, written in the mid-16th century, shows a style that transferred the vocal motet of the Renaissance to instrumental music, and was often for ensemble. However, pieces for keyboard instruments tried to break away from the vocal style, and Andrea Gabrieli's work in the late 16th century established the standard form of imitative ricercare with multiple themes. Frescobaldi in the 17th century established a style based on a single theme, organically relating each part through variations. This single-theme ricercare then gradually transitioned into the fugue, showing technical development.
