Born in 1586. The eldest son of Hoshina Masanao, lord of Takato Castle in Shinano. His foster mother was the younger sister of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He served Ieyasu and participated in the Battles of Komaki and Nagakute, and the Siege of Odawara. In 1589, he moved with his father to Tako in Shimousa (Chiba Prefecture). After the Battle of Sekigahara, he regained his former territory and became the first head of the Hoshina family to rule Takato Domain. His fief was 25,000 koku.
