Pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione. C ₂₁ H ₃₀ O ₂ (314.46). One of the luteal hormones. Progesterone is the only luteal hormone secreted by the body. In 1934, it was independently isolated from pig ovaries by four research groups, including A. Butenandt, KH Slotta, WM Allen, and M. Hartmann. It is synthesized in large quantities from raw materials such as stigmasterol, diosgenin, and ergosterol, and is important as a raw material for the synthesis of adrenal cortical hormones. White crystals or crystalline powder. It is a crystalline polymorph with a melting point of 128-133 °C or 120-122 °C, and the lower melting point is unstable and easily changes to the higher melting point. +174 to +182° (dioxane). λ _max 240 nm. Practically insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, and dioxane. Adrenal cortical hormones, male hormones, and estrus hormones are all synthesized starting from progesterone. Hartmannらの四つの研究グループにより，それぞれ独立にブタの卵巣から単離された．スチグマステロール，ジオスゲニン，エルゴステロールなどの原料から多量に合成されており，副じん皮質ホルモンの合成原料として重要である．白色の結晶または結晶性の粉末．融点128～133 ℃，または120～122 ℃ の結晶多形であり，低融点のほうが不安定で高融点のほうにかわりやすい．＋174～＋182°(ジオキサン)．λ_max 240 nm．水に難溶，エタノール，アセトン，クロロホルム，ベンゼン，ジオキサンに可溶．副じん皮質ホルモン，男性ホルモン，発情ホルモンはすべてプロゲステロンを出発点として生合成されている．切迫流産，習慣性流産，着床不全による不妊，不正子宮出血，無月経，月経痛などの治療に用いられている．[CAS 57-83-0]
