A former town in Sakai County in northern Fukui Prefecture. Occupying the northeastern part of the Fukui Plain and mountainous areas, the main settlement, Maruoka, developed as a castle town for Maruoka Castle, and is located along the Hokuriku Kaido (National Route 8), and is connected to the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway. From the Meiji to Taisho periods, it was famous as a textile production area. In recent years, it has become the center of chemical fiber and narrow-width textile production. 107.36 km2 . In March 2006, it merged with Mikuni Town, Harue Town, and Sakai Town in Sakai County to become a city, Sakai City. Population: 32,066 (2003). 福井県北部,坂井郡の旧町。福井平野北東部と山地部を占め,主集落丸岡は丸岡城の城下町として発達,北陸街道(国道8号線)に沿い,北陸本線,北陸自動車道が通じる。明治から大正にかけては機業の産地として有名だった。近年は,化学繊維,細幅織物の生産が多い。107.36km2。2006年3月,坂井郡三国町,春江町,坂井町と合併し市制,坂井市となる。3万2066人(2003)。
