In Greek legend, she was the daughter of Athenian king Pandiōn. She was also the younger sister of Prokne, who married Thracian king Tereus. Tereus had one child with Prokne, Itys, but he falsely claimed that Prokne had died, summoned Philomela, raped her, and cut off her tongue to keep her quiet. However, after much effort, Philomela wove a message of her misfortune into her robe and sent it to her sister. Prokne then tracked her down, killed Itys, and offered her body to her husband in revenge. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
