Frobenius, Leo Viktor
Born: June 29, 1873, Berlin
[Died] August 9, 1938. German ethnologist from Lake Maggiore. Professor emeritus at the University of Frankfurt and director of the Ethnological Museum in Frankfurt. Conducted 12 field surveys in Africa, studying prehistoric art in southern Africa, the Sahara Desert, Jordan, Norway, Spain, and other places. Developing F. Ratzel's theory, he proposed the concept of cultural sphere theory and attempted to reconstruct the cultures of various ethnic groups historically. He is also famous for collecting a huge amount of material on the myths of various ethnic groups and analyzing it to study their mythological worldviews. He wrote more than 60 books, but his main works are Das Zeitalter des Sonnengottes (1904), Kulturgeschichte Afrikas (33), "Der Ursprung der afrikanischen Kulturen" (1898), and "Geographische Kulturkunde" (1904).

Frobenius, Ferdinand Georg

Born: October 26, 1849 in Berlin
Died August 3, 1917. Berlin. German mathematician. Studied at the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin. Served as an assistant professor at the University of Berlin (1874-75), a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1875-92), and in 1892 became a professor at the University of Berlin, a position he held for the rest of his life. He made significant contributions to group theory, particularly the concept of abstract groups and the theory of finite groups under linear substitutions. Frobenius' discoveries in abstract group theory are summarized in his paper On Commutative Groups (79). Much of the theory of finite groups under linear substitutions was done in collaboration with I. Schur, and many of the results are included in On Group Characters (96). He also contributed to the solution of homogeneous linear differential equations.
