Nawa-shi

Japanese:
Nawa-shi

A powerful clan in Hoki Province (Tottori Prefecture). The Murakami Genji. According to the Nawa Genealogy, the grandfather of the historically famous Nagatoshi, Yukimori, was the 11th generation descendant of Prince Mochihira, son of Emperor Murakami. He was exiled to Hoki Province, where he was given the Nagata domain and took the name of the Nagata clan. Nagatoshi eventually lived in Nawa-sho (Daisen Town, Saihaku County, Tottori Prefecture) and took the name of the Nawa clan. Nagatoshi ruled over the provinces of Inaba and Hoki as a powerful vassal of the new Kenmu government, but died fighting against Ashikaga Takauji, who rebelled against the Kenmu government (1336). His son Yoshitaka was also killed in battle two years later. During the reign of Nagato's grandson Akioki, the clan moved to Yatsushiro in Higo Province (Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture), and later, during the reign of Akitada, they moved to Uto in the same province (Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture) (early 16th century) and called themselves the Uto clan. During the reign of Akitaka, the clan lost Uto due to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Kyushu, and after wandering around various countries, in 1621 (7th year of the Genna era) they were welcomed to Yanagawa in Chikugo Province (Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture), which was under the control of the Tachibana clan, where they spent about 300 years. In the Meiji era, Nagayuki became the chief priest of Nawa Shrine and was granted the title of baron.
