Japanese: 健康優良児 - けんこうゆうりょうじ

It means a child who is physically and mentally healthy and excels in academics and other areas, but this began to attract social attention in 1930 when the National Healthy Children Awards Association was established, sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun Company and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This award is aimed at sixth-grade elementary school children, and selects healthy children from applicants across the country. Although it was suspended due to the war (1946-48), it has continued to this day. Initially, due to the context of the times, emphasis was placed on physical aspects such as physique and strength. However, after the war, based on the definition of health in the WHO Constitution, selection is now based on academic and behavioral aspects as well as social aspects (such as cooperation and initiative) in addition to physical aspects.

心身が健康で学業その他の面でも優れている児童という意味であるが，1930年朝日新聞社主催，文部省･厚生省後援で，全国健康優良児童表彰会が発足してから，社会的関心を集めるようになった。これは，小学校六年生を対象とし，全国の応募者のなかから健康優良児を選ぶものである。戦争のため中断(1946‐48)はあったが，今日に至っている。当初は時代的背景もあって，体格や体力の身体面に重点がおかれていた。しかし戦後は，WHO憲章の健康の定義にもとづいて，身体面に加えて学業面や行動面，さらには社会的な面(協調性や積極性など)も加味されて選ばれている。
