An Indian religious leader from the late 14th century to the early 15th century. He was from Allahabad in North India, but belonged to the South Indian Ramanuja sect. He left this sect over the issue of communal eating, and preached bhakti (devotion) to the god Rama, centered in Varanasi in North India. He is said to have been the starting point of the bhakti movement in North India. He ignored caste discrimination and took on disciples from various castes. He himself founded the Ramananda sect, but from among his disciples he gave birth to important sects such as the Kabir sect.
