Ramana Maharshi

1879‐1950
A modern Indian mystic. Born into a middle-class Brahmin family near Madurai in South India, he was the second son of a lawyer and had a very ordinary childhood. However, at the age of 17, he suddenly underwent a radical experience and retired to the foot of Mount Arunachala ("Red Mountain"; Tiruvannamalai in Tamil), never to leave the area for the next 50 years. He was a very influential person, and many people visited him from both inside and outside the country. Most of his works are poems in Tamil, but they also include some short pieces in Tamil prose and Tamil translations of works attributed to Shankara.

近代インドの神秘主義者。南インド，マドゥライ近郊の中流のバラモンの家庭で，弁護士の次男として生まれたごく平凡な子どもであったが，17歳のとき，突然根本体験を経験し，アルナーチャラ(〈赤い山〉。タミル語でティルバンナーマライ)山の麓にこもって50年間，終生一歩もそこを離れることがなかったといわれる。たいへん感化力の強い人で，多くの人々が国の内外から訪れた。その著作の大部分はタミル語の詩であるが，なかにはタミル語の散文で書かれた若干の小品やシャンカラに帰せられている作品のタミル語訳も含まれている。
