Rāmānuja - Rāmanuja (English spelling)

There are different theories about his birth year. He was an Indian Vedanta philosopher. He founded the Sri Vaishnava sect of Vaishnavism. He was born in Sriperumbudur in southern India, and after receiving a formal education, he studied under the Vedanta philosopher Yādavaprakāśa (date of birth and death unknown). However, he was not satisfied with his teacher's teachings, so he left Yadava and studied the teachings of Yāmuna, which was a successor to Nāthamuni, who integrated the learning of Sanskrit and Tamil. As Yāmuna's successor, he traveled around India to spread his teachings, restored Vaishnava temples, and gained many followers. His major works include a commentary on the Brahma-Sutra, his own interpretation of the Upanishads in the Vedanta-Samgraha, and a commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita. Through these works, he attempted to synthesize the monistic philosophy of Vedanta with the folk belief in Vishnu, preaching the path of devotion to God and opening the way to spiritual salvation for the lower classes.
