A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Juliformia of the class Diplopoda. They are round and string-like with a rounded front of the head, a circular cross-section of the body, and short walking legs, making them well suited to burrowing into the soil. They have more than 30 body segments. There are more than 2,000 species distributed around the world, including the largest millipede species (some exceeding 30 cm in length), but most species found in Japan are 1 to 6 cm in length. They undergo a segmental metamorphosis in which the number of body segments increases with each molt, and they take about three years to mature.
